The Scope of Practice of Massage Therapy is defined as follows:
The practice of massage therapy is the assessment of the soft tissue and joints of the body and the treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction and pain of the soft tissue and joints by manipulation to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function, or relieve pain. (Massage Therapy Act, 1991)
More simply put, massage is therapeutic, and whether it’s used to decrease stress or treat the symptoms of specific conditions, it can be a soothing and relaxing experience for people of all ages. Massage can relax muscles, decrease stress, anxiety and depression; and because massage has an effect on the cardiovascular, lymphatic, nervous and musculoskeletal systems, it can be used to treat pain and more importantly, promote the body’s ability to heal itself.
